Let My Vote Count calls off Sept 29 demo

Anti-government pressure group Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) has called off its Tuesday, September 29 intended demonstration over the current voters’ register after legal jabs between it and the Ghana Police Service on Monday, September 28.

A circuit court presided over by Justice M. E Essandoh had on Monday morning granted an application by the group to set aside a 10-day ex parte injunction secured by the police.

However, two hours after that ruling, another circuit court – presided over by Justice Jennifer Anne Myers Ahmed – slapped a fresh injunction on the picketing at the headoffice of the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

Among the alibi adduced by the police for the fresh injunction is that its capacity has been strained as a result of deployment of personnel for the chieftaincy dispute in Bolgatanga.

Speaking on TV3’s News 360 on Monday hours after the fresh injunction, Convener of LMVCA David Asante accused the police of being manipulated.

“We anticipated it could happen and it has happened,” Mr Asante emphasized.

A press conference has been scheduled to be held on Tuesday by the Alliance to voice out some concerns.

A September 16 march by the pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) pressure group was abruptly brought to an end after the police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at demonstrators following disagreements over routes.
