Legon, July 10, GNA – The Legon District Police Command on Thursday impounded 40 motorbikes during an operation organized on the Madina-Legon-Accra route and the road in front of the Trinity Theological Seminary College near Legon.
Speaking to the GNA, the District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr. Richmond Bonsu said armed robbers have of late being using unregistered motorbikes for their criminal activities, and this has prompted the Legon Police to mount an operation to scrutinize the authenticity of documents covering the motorbikes that ply within the district.
Five of the seized motorbikes did not have registered number plates while some of the riders were not wearing their helmets with others having fake number plates.
Mr Bonsu ordered the owners of the impounded motorbikes to bring the documents on their bikes for inspection.
Meanwhile all the registration numbers of the bikes have been sent to DVLA for verification, while the unregistered motorbikes’ chassis numbers have been sent to the CEPS for verification. The Legon Police Command has in its possession some mobile phones and lap-top computers which were seize in previous operations and has therefore urged people living within the East Legon vicinity, who have lost some items to contact the Command or the Nima Divisional Police Commander for identification and collection.
In another development, the Accra-North-East Divisional MTTU Command has also impounded 30 motorbikes during a recent operation within Madina and its environment.
Speaking to the GNA the Accra-North-East Divisional Police MTTU Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (A.S.P.) James Owusu-Mensah said among the 30 motorbikes impounded, there were three unregistered motorbikes.
The list of all the impounded motorbikes has been submitted to the DVLA to ascertain the authenticity of the registration numbers. Mr Owusu-Mensah asked all motor riders to always carry the particulars of the bikes for inspection by the police. He warned them to refrain from using driver’s licence to ride the bikes, adding that all motorbikes riders are expected to hold Class “A” motorbikes licences which have been authorized by the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority.
