The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has imposed a transfer ban on Legon Cities FC after the club repeatedly failed to settle a GH₵29,000 debt owed to former player Francis Nuer Addo. The debt stems from unpaid salaries and benefits dating back to October 2021, as ruled by the GFA Players’ Status Committee (PSC).
Despite an extended payment schedule and multiple warnings, Legon Cities defaulted on their obligations, missing instalment deadlines in December 2024, January 2025, and February 2025. The GFA Disciplinary Committee confirmed that the automatic sanctions, including a domestic and international transfer ban for the 2025/26 season, have now taken effect.
In addition to the ban, Legon Cities face the risk of forfeiting league and FA Cup points for each match played while the debt remains unpaid. However, enforcement of this penalty has been delayed, drawing criticism from Addo and other stakeholders.
Francis Addo, who sought the intervention of the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), has voiced frustration over the GFA’s perceived selective enforcement of sanctions. Addo highlighted inconsistencies, noting that clubs like Nsoatreman FC were penalized promptly under similar circumstances.
“The GFA’s delay undermines fairness and the rule of law. The automatic sanctions should have been applied months ago,” Addo stated in a formal letter dated June 19, 2025.
The GFA has yet to issue a response regarding the allegations of selective enforcement. Meanwhile, Legon Cities must resolve the debt to lift the transfer ban and avoid further penalties as they prepare for the 2025/26 season.
