Legal Resources Centre sensitises women on rights

The Legal Resources Centre (LRC), has embarked on a series of sensitisation programmes in the Upper West Region, to educate women and minors in the various communities on their human rights.

The programme, which formed part of an initiative by the Women and Minors Rights Committee of Ghana Bar Association (GBA) and LRC, is aimed to educate people more about their human rights and how to protect those rights against abuses.

Beneficiaries of the LRC-GBA initiative included students of Lawra Senior High School and groups such as hairdressers, farmers, teachers, weavers, and traders.

Ms Daphne Nabila, Executive Director of LRC, at forums in Wa, Lawra, and Nadowli, said the dignity of a person is paramount in every society and urged people to always go to the right organisation to seek support when their human rights are violated instead of taking the law into their own hands.

She mentioned the Legal Aid Scheme, which has established offices in Wa, Lawra, and Nadowli as an avenue for help to people whose rights have been violated.

“The LAS is the first and best place to seek help because it is open to many people whose human rights are violated and the services of lawyers are also free,” she explained.

Ms Nabila also mentioned the law courts and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, as well as Department of Social Welfare as other avenues for people to seek redress when their rights are abused.

She stated that human beings form an integral part of the society and therefore the human rights enshrined in the 1992 Constitution should be respected.
