Legal action against defaulters of poverty alleviation loans

Kenyasi (B/A) Feb. 24 GNA – The Asutifi District Assembly is poised to take legal action against defaulters of poverty alleviation loans.

Mr. Sarbeng Nsankyire, presiding member, disclosed in an interview with Ghana News Agency at Kenyasi that the Assembly had so far retrieved only 29 million cedis out of 500 million cedis disbursed as loans since 1998.

He said the Assembly was finalising arrangements with its solicitors for the prosecution of the defaulters to begin. The Presiding Member gave the assurance that the issue would not be dealt with along political party lines and called on beneficiaries to discard the erroneous impression that such loans were granted to sustain the loyalty of members of any political party.

The Assembly will make every effort to retrieve the loans to enable other eligible citizens to benefit from the facility, Mr. Nsankyire said, adding that the legal process was the last resort since all efforts to get the defaulters to pay back had proved futile. 24 FEB O4
