Ledzokuku NDC condidate petitions court

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ledzokuku in the December 2004 elections, Nii Nortey Dua, has petitioned the Accra High Court to declare him the winner of the election in the constituency.

He is also seeking an order for scrutiny and a recount of all valid votes cast in the constituency and a collation of the figures obtained.

The Electoral Commission (EC) and Dr Gladys Nortey Ashitey, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ledzokuku, are the respondents in the petition.

In a statement accompanying the suit, Nii Dua claimed that on December 7, 2004 the returning officer in the constituency wrongly declared Dr Nortey Ashitey the winner.

According to the statement, upon proper counting of the valid votes cast in the election, Nii Dua should have been declared the winner with total votes of 33,059 as against 33,039 for the NPP candidate.

It said when the results were gazetted on December 31, 2004, the EC, however, credit him with 32,169 votes while the NPP candidate was credited with 33,039 votes.
