Leaders must care – Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has indicated that a true leader is the one who identifies himself with the vulnerable and underprivileged and provides their needs.

He said political, social and religious leadership should be about service to humanity to improve upon their lots.

President Kufuor was speaking at a dinner dance to climax the fifth anniversary of Women Empowerment Foundation International (WEFI), a benevolent non-governmental organisation on Saturday.

He said Ghana has everything in terms of natural and human resources and that it would only take good leaders to ensure accelerated socio-economic transformation of the country.

“God has blessed Ghana with everything, and that it is about time we demanded visionary leadership by being self-reliant in our own small ways,” he noted, adding that Ghanaians must have the belief in themselves that they are the only people who could bring the needed transformation to their society without the support of foreigners.

He said WEFI had shown that Ghanaians have the ability to transform the society in which they live.

“WEFI is made up of mostly businesswomen and professionals who have pulled their resources together to build schools, hospitals, boreholes, toilets, police posts and provided scholarships and vocational training to many underprivileged people and communities across the country. Ghanaians must support the good cause of WEFI to help bring total transformation in the country,” he urged while demanding accountability from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

The general overseer of Fountain Gate Chapel, Eastwood Anaba, said Ghanaians must not depend on central government alone for development but also mobilise the little resources they have to help the society. He implored churches to do more for society.

“We can help bring tremendous improvement in our lives if those, who are blessed with riches, can also invest and support the less privileged in the society,” he observed.

The executive president of WEFI, Mrs. Vida Hanson, said the organisation would be building its own headquarters and school and provide a lot more scholarships to underprivileged children to have access to quality education.

Special tribute was paid to the founder of the organisation, Sonia Antwi.
