The General Secretary of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana, (NALAG) Mr. Kwasi Ameyaw Cheremeh, has been elected as the NPP parliamentary candidate for the Sunyani East Constituency at a delegates? congress held at Kootokrom near Sunyani.
He quickly dedicated his victory to his fellow contestants and the party. The former Presiding Member,(PM) of the Sunyani Municipal Assembly polled 61 votes to beat two other contestants, Mr. Kwame Twumasi Awuah, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive and Nana Obiri Boahene, Minister of State at the Ministry of Interior who polled 39 and five votes respectively. Only one out of the 106 ballots was rejected.
The election was supervised by the Sunyani Municipal Office of the Electoral Commission. Mr. Ameyaw Cheremeh, who incurred the displeasure of some elders of the NPP when he challenged then Senior minister JH Mensah in the 2004 primaries, thanked the delegates for electing him and pledged to address the problem of delegates being neglected after elections. He gave the assurance that his main priority would be to develop human resource to accelerate growth and development.
Mr. Ameyaw Cheremeh said he would work in close collaboration with the entire constituency to ensure total development of the area. He urged his supporters and that of the other contestants to remain united to enable the NPP retain the seat. The Sunyani MCE, Mr. Twumasi Awuah also thanked the delegates for their votes and asked his supporters to rally behind the winner to ensure a resounding victory for the party in the December polls.
He told brongahafoweb that he is not disturbed by his defeat since elections are either won or lost. ?What is most important now is to campaign for Mr. Ameyaw Cheremeh to enable him retain the seat for the NPP?, he said. Nana Obiri Boahene, whose performance surprised many observers, commended the delegates for the peaceful manner they elected the candidate and pledged his full support for the winner.
