Agona Swedru, Aug 14, GNA – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is to organise free screening next month to reduce breast cancer for over 400 women from Swedru and Winneba areas. The one-day exercise forms part of the social responsibility of the Church.
Mr Paa Willie Donkoh, Chairman of the Public Affair Committee of the Agona Swedru branch of Church said it formed part of the activities marking its 175th anniversary and the 200 birthday of Prophet Joseph Smith, the Founder.
He said a team of medical personnel from Accra would undertake the exercise.
Mr Donkoh pointed out that research had shown that breast cancer cases were prevalent in the area and said there was the need to create awareness to reduce death among women.
He said the Church had presented equipment and medicine to the Swedru and Winneba Government Hospitals to improve the quality health-care.
Mr Donkoh stated that it had presented assorted books to the Department of Arts of the University Education Winneba. He said that it was the wish of the Church that everybody would hear the good message of Jesus Christ and expressed the hope that the people to embrace it.
The Public Affairs Committee Chairman noted that it was the perception of people that the had isolated itself from the society stated that it undertake social and economic activities. Sister Mary Afful, in-charge of Community Relations of the Church said it operated a micro-credit scheme to help both members and non-members to become self-reliant.
She stated that more than a 1,000 women in and around Agona Swedru had benefited from the scheme aimed at reducing poverty and to help them to cater for their children’s education.
Sister Afful said the Church has embarked on an educational programme for its members, especially young girls on the need to dress decently and to avoid promiscuity.
She said the Church was putting up two buildings at Winneba and Odoben to propagate the Gospel.
Mr I K Oteng, President of the Swedru Branch said members were enjoying better life because they follow the principles of the Christ to improved their social and economic status. He thanked the leaders for bringing to the Church to Africa, Ghana and Central Region.
