Lake Bosomtwe communities worried about deplorable roads

Abono-Ashanti, June 15, GNA – The chiefs and people from communities on the banks of Lake Bosomtwe have expressed concern about the deplorable roads in the area.

They pointed out that although the Lake was a major tourist attraction and a major source of revenue for Bosomtwe District Assembly, the poor road network had made it unattractive to tourists. In addition, most drivers have refused to ply the roads compelling people to walk several kilometres before boarding vehicles to transport their foodstuffs to Kumasi and other marketing centres.

The people expressed the sentiments during a tour of the area by Mr James Fosu, Bosomtwe District Chief Executive. Some of the communities visited were Anyinatiase, Abaase, Abrodwum, Asuoho- Adwafo, Pipie, Nkowi, Obbo and Abono.

At Pipie, the people refused to meet Mr Fosu and his entourage and protested against the tour alleging that the assembly, past and present governments had abandoned communities around the Lake. They said “We are also Ghanaians who pay taxes and should benefit from the national cake.”

Mr Fosu assured the people that development projects in the district would be shared fairly and appealed to them to pay their taxes regularly to help generate funds to complement the assembly’s share of the Common Fund.

Nana Kwame Antwi, Chief of Abono, appealed to the assembly to improve the infrastructure and facilities for the development of education in the district since that was the best legacy that it could bequeath to the youth, the nation’s future leaders. 15 June 08
