Labourer escapes from Police cells

Emmanuel Odonkor, a labourer standing trial over drug related charges is reported to have absconded from the Sowutoum Police Station in Accra.

This was made known to an Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday by the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Kofi Adu, when the case involving Odonkor and four others was mentioned.

He said the case investigator told him that a scuffle ensued at the station and Odonkor took advantage of it with three others, who were being held on different cases, escaped.

Prosecution therefore prayed the court to remand Odonkor’s four accomplices, who were in police custody to prison custody as a result of the incident.

The court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri ordered that Odonkor’s four accomplices should be remanded into prison custody.

It further ordered the Prison Officers to ensure that the accused persons were brought to court regularly.

The four accomplices are Paul Mensah, unemployed, Ishmael Quaye, a Video Editor, Thomas Nkansah a machine operator and Addo Kuffour, aka Kofi Rasta, a painter. They are facing charges of possessing quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

While Quaye, Mensah, Odonkor were arrested with quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, Kuffour, who resides at Anyaa Kokompe, was found with a parcel of dried leaves.

They were rounded up by the Police on June 13, this year at about 05:00 hours, during a special operation at Odorkor Official Town and Anyaa Kokompe respectively. They have denied the charges.
