Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah has revealed that the ministry is working together with some development partners to formulate a new labour migration policy as the Labour Act does not cover issues “regarding the diasporan returning home to work because it assumes that they are all Ghanaians are already covered under the existing law”.
The policy, he said, is to help manage and protect the rights of migrants and reintegrate them in Ghana’s labour market.
Mr Awuah said the new policy will ensure that “our diasporan citizens benefit from the provisions on the fundamental human rights and the rights to work as espoused in ILO conventions”.
The policy will include provisions for the “transfer of persons abroad back home and other social inclusions mechanism for the aged and the elimination of all forms of discrimination”.
The minister added that the ministry is working on a comprehensive labour market information system.
He said the Ghana Labour Market Information system is a “web-based IT driven technology service which seeks to bring together all employment and labour related data generated by varied institutions which we call the labour market observatories in Ghana”.
The policy is meant to make job search easier for Ghanaians.
The minister was speaking at the Diaspora Homecoming Summit held at the Accra International Conference Centre Thursday.
