Kyiraya Watershed being developed for irrigation

Nkawie (Ashanti Region) 17 Dec. ’98 The Kyiraya Watershed in the Atwima District, is to be developed for Agricultural Irrigation, through joint funding from the Government of Ghana, International Development Agency (IDA) and World Bank. Mr Peter Yaw Mensah, the District Chief Executive, who announced this, said the project would benefit 16 selected farming communities. He was opening the first training workshop for Partner Organisations and the District Watershed Management Team set up by the assembly to manage the project at Nkawie. It was attended by representatives drawn from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Public Works Department, National Mobilisation Programme and some Non-Governmental Organisations. Mr Mensah explained that apart from irrigation, the project will provide water supply for domestic and animal use as well as soil and environmental conservation. The District Chief Executive observed that the successful implementation of the project will help to raise agricultural production in the area and asked all stakeholders to support and play their assigned roles effectively. The Kyiraya Project is a component of the Village Infrastructure Project initiated by the Government to promote effective community management, utilisation and development of local resources and their protection against misuse.
