Kyereyaase gets a new JHS block

Kyereyaase (Ash), Oct 20, GNA – Mr Thomas Ofori-Donkor, Atwima-Nwabiagya District Chief Executive, has inaugurated a GH¢ 350,000 three-unit classroom block for Kyereyaase Junior High School (JHS), a small farming community near Nerebehi in Ashanti. Initiated under the District’s Community Assembly Initiative Programme, the Assembly contributed GH¢16,500 while the community provided labour and other materials worth GH¢18,500. Mr Ofori-Donkor said under the government’s School under Trees” Project, three six-unit and two three-unit classroom blocks have so far been constructed in the district.

In addition, he said, four communities have been provided with three-unit classroom block each, under the HIPC programme. Mr Ofori-Donkor said besides the provision of market stalls in two communities, the German Technical Co-operation (GTZ) has put up four three-unit and three other six-unit classroom blocks with sanitation facilities for some deprived school communities. He disclosed that the assembly in collaboration with some active school communities has put up 17 classroom blocks from its share of the assembly’s common fund and Internally Generated Funds (IGF). Mr Ofori-Donkor said about 12,000 pupils in the district are fed under the government’s School Feeding Programme. Mr Benito Owusu-Bio, Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, said the extension of electricity to the town from Nerebehi has been awarded on contract. Mrs Diana Appiah, the District Director of Education, noted that the provision of adequate infrastructure especially in the deprived rural areas was crucial to bridge the gap between rural and urban education. Nana Kwame Opoku, the Regent of Kyereyaase, who presided, commended the government and the assembly for providing potable water, classrooms and good access road to improve the living standard of the people in the area and appealed to the assembly to help the community improve its poor environmental sanitation to avert possible outbreak of an epidemic.
