Accra, Aug. 19, -Poor learning achievements in Basic schools are the results of poor quality teaching, excessive loss of instructional time arising out of teacher absenteeism, inappropriate teaching methodology and ineffective supervision. Mr Kwabena Kyere, Deputy Minister of Education made this known today at the inauguration of Greater Accra Diocesan Catholic Teachers’ Guild (GACTEG), on the theme “The Teacher and the Education Reforms programme” in Accra. All efforts being made towards quality education will come to nought if teachers do not shake off these negative tendencies and give off their best. “It is pertinent to note that without quality education, individuals cannot make any meaningful contribution to national development and national growth rate cannot be accelerated”. Mr Kyere stressed the need for teachers to re-examine their roles in national development and rededicate themselves to the task in order to make themselves more productive and self-disciplined. Ghana, like many other African states, is providing the sort of education that will make the people function effectively in the socio- economic development needs of the country. “It needs to be emphasised that our ability to lift our country from the poverty cycle depends to a large extent on giving them relevant education in the context of socio-economic realities. Government was providing the necessary infrastructure and logistics to enable teachers to realise the objectives of the education reforms.
