Asante Kotoko assistant coach Prince Yaw Owusu has confirmed that star striker Kwame Opoku will miss this weekend’s Super Clash against arch-rivals Hearts of Oak, dealing a blow to the Porcupine Warriors ahead of the highly anticipated fixture in Accra.
Opoku has been sidelined since sustaining an injury in Kotoko’s opening game of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season against Berekum Chelsea. Although the forward recently returned to training, the technical team believes he is not yet ready for competitive action.
Speaking to the media after Kotoko’s 4-2 win over Karela United at the Baba Yara Stadium, Yaw Owusu revealed that the clash against Hearts has come too soon for the striker.
“To be honest with you, Sunday is too early for him,” Owusu admitted. “We just have to prepare him well so that when he comes back, he comes to stay.”
Kotoko travel to the Accra Sports Stadium for the Matchday 9 encounter, looking to build on their recent run of form and close the gap on the league leaders.
The much-anticipated showdown, set to kick off at 15:00 GMT, will see two of Ghana’s biggest clubs renew their fierce rivalry in what promises to be another pulsating chapter of the country’s most famous football fixture.
