Kwame Baffour Abronye has been returned as chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana’s Bono Region after securing 201 votes in the regional delegates elections.
A total of 281 NPP delegates took part in the contest, with the majority backing the incumbent chairman and giving him another mandate to lead the party in the region.
Following his victory, Abronye warned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the NPP would mount a coordinated effort to recover the 11 parliamentary seats it lost in the 2024 general elections.
The re-elected chairman said he would work with all candidates who contested the regional elections as the party seeks to rebuild its position ahead of the next general election in 2028.
He also said he had a strategy to deal with the NDC, while thanking delegates for supporting his return as regional chairman.
Abronye’s victory places him at the centre of the NPP’s preparations in the Bono Region, where the party will aim to improve on its performance in the 2024 general elections. His pledge to cooperate with the other candidates is intended to bring together the different elements of the regional party organisation as it begins its work towards 2028.
Fahad Usman, who was elected regional Communication Officer, also outlined his priorities after the vote. He said he would ensure that communication officers across the region were given the resources and training required for the campaign ahead.
Usman said strengthening the party’s communication structures would be important as the NPP prepared for the 2028 general elections and sought to respond effectively to the political contest with the NDC.
The chairperson of the elections committee, Jenifer Oforiwaa Queen, praised the conduct of the poll. She said the peaceful nature of the election was an indication of the NPP’s readiness to work towards regaining power in the 2028 general elections.
The election brought together delegates to choose the party’s regional leadership team. Abronye’s successful bid means he will continue as the figure responsible for leading the Bono Region branch as it responds to the losses suffered in the previous national vote.
