In a groundbreaking move for Ghanaian football, Kwahuhene Daasebere Akuamoah Boateng III has introduced an insurance policy for all registered supporters of Okwawu United.
The scheme, hailed as the first of its kind in club football history, will provide cover for fans during matches and when travelling with the team. It follows a tragic incident last year when a journalist and a supporter of the club lost their lives in an accident on the Accra-Kumasi highway while on their way to an away game.
Speaking at the first-ever supporters’ congress in Mpraeso, in the Kwahu South Municipality, Daasebere Akuamoah Boateng III said the initiative was aimed at boosting morale and inspiring both the team and its fan base.
“This initiative will serve as a beacon of hope. With a little push, promotion to the Premier League is within reach,” he told stakeholders, urging natives of Kwahu to rally behind the club.
Okwawu United, relegated in 2006, has spent nearly two decades outside Ghana’s top flight. The traditional leader stressed that football has become a business and called for an additional GHC1 million in support to strengthen the squad and implement a new strategic plan.
Supporters welcomed the insurance policy as a bold step to protect their welfare and strengthen their bond with the club, which has finished in second and third place in the Access Bank Division One League Zone Three over the past three seasons.
