Dusty roads in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region are posing a danger to the health of residents and road users.
The re-construction of roads in the area began recently after several agitations by residents.
According to a report by Class News’ Hafiz Tijani, before construction began, the deplorable state of the roads posed a threat to pregnant mothers, who risked miscarriages on it.
Construction work on the 22-kilometre Tebokrom-Kenyase-Antoa-Bonwire road began recently, but has left road users with a whole new problem – dust.
Residents are worried about the heavy dust, which comes with the work. Drivers are not happy because visibility is impeded. Most drivers have resorted to using nose masks to avoid the dust.
One driver, who spoke to Class News said: “The dust is severe. For us the reconstruction of the road was a joy because it had been in a deplorable state for long, the contractor should have provided water to wet the ground. Passengers also complain but we don’t have a choice”.
Long term inhalation of dust causes lung problems, and respiratory disorders such as asthma and cold.
According to Hafiz Tijani, sites in the area like the Antoa shrine and the Bonwire Kente Weaving Centre have recorded low patronage due to the poor nature of the road.
