Kumasi, Feb 09, GNA – A total of 60 maternal deaths were recorded in the Kumasi metropolis last year, Dr Joseph Oduro, the Metropolitan Director of Health Services, said on Thursday. He attributed the development to the failure of most expectant mothers to seek regular medical checkups to identify danger signs associated with pregnancy.
Dr Oduro was speaking at a day’s durbar dubbed, “Saving Women’s Life” organized by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) for a cross section of women in Kumasi on Thursday.
“You should discard negative socio-cultural practices that endanger your lives during pregnancy”, he told the participants. Dr (Mrs) Annie Opoku, Medical Superintendent in-charge of the Maternal and Child Health Hospital (MCHH) in Kumasi, said the hospital recorded a total of 947 child deliveries last year, adding that out of the figure, there were six still births. She appealed to the government to provide the hospital with a stand-by generator, an ambulance and x-ray machine. 09 Feb 06
