Kumasi Police detain 209 suspected criminals

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested 209 suspected criminals believed to be terrorizing residents in Kumasi, especially at night time, robbing them of their phones and monies, among other valuables.

The suspects were made up of 191 males and 18 females.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Augustine Gyening, the Regional Police Commander, who announced this at a press briefing on Tuesday said, they were arrested from their hideouts around the Asafo interchange, A-Life Supermarket, Asafo Neoplan Station, Abinkyi areas in Kumasi.

A Kia Rio taxi usually used by some of them only in the nights has also been impounded.

Machetes and substances believed to be Indian hemp and other hard drugs were seized from some of them. They would be screened and prosecuted in due course, DCOP Gyening said.

He said among the suspects is Prince Adu Gyamfi, 21, alias Owuraku, the prime suspect of the shooting incident that led to the death of a security man at the Ashfood Court Hotel, Bantama.

Owuraku was arrested by the police on a tip-off, in a Church at Abuakwa on Sunday, June 30.

During investigation, Owuraku mentioned one Bob Seidu, also a suspect in phone- snatching case as the one behind the murder but Seidu has since denied the allegation.

Owuraku was also said to have killed one person and stabbed another. He is also alleged to have shot a 37-year-old woman and her two children at the Bantama Angola House, in the course of his robbery expeditions.

The commander has called on victims to come and identify their perpetrators.
