Kumasi: One arrested for disrupting EC registration

Police at Asokwa in the Ashanti Region are holding a 26-year- old for allegedly vandalising registration kits belonging to the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC).

The incident occurred at the Gyinyase M/A Primary School registration centre in Kumasi during the limited voter registration exercise by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Friday April 29.

According to Class FM’s correspondent in the region, Hafiz Tijani, six heavily built men on three motor bikes were said to have interrupted the registration process to challenge an individual who was going through the registration process.
Their action, however, turned violent with the macho men snatching forms of the EC officials and allegedly vandalising registration equipment.

A distress call was placed to the Police who came and picked up one Joseph Bamboni, who is believed to have called in the macho men to perpetrate the act.
Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer ASP Mohammed Yussif Tanko, who confirmed the incident to Class News, said investigations had begun into the matter.

He said: “At about 2pm in the afternoon, we understand there was commotion over the challenge of someone’s eligibility to register. Six persons who came on motorbikes managed to run away but we arrested one person at Atonsu believed to have called the persons who caused the chaos to assist with investigations.

“We understand they made away with EC challenge form but all other equipment and materials are intact,” he added.

He cautioned people to desist from disrupting the EC registration process because perpetrators who are arrested by the police and found culpable would not be spared.
