Kumasi: Military disrupts drivers demo

The military have taken over the commercial city center in Kumasi in the Ashanti region as ‘trotro’ drivers demonstrate against police extortion.

Commercial drivers in the town Monday morning parked their cars in protest of what they said was a deliberate and persistent harassment by the Police officials in that city.

They accused the police of extortion and unwarranted arrests targeted at commercial drivers only.

Some of the angry drivers told XYZ News they will demonstrate by not running the roads and keeping passengers stranded until the city authorities address their concerns.

Meanwhile Ashanti regional correspondent Isaac Bediako said military men have been assigned to ensure that activities of the protestors are put in check.

According to him, many of the protestors have complained they are being intimidated against expressing themselves freely by the soldiers.

One of the drivers who was manhandled by an officer insists the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly is hiding behind the military to keep them mute in discontent.

“They will not stop us. They cannot hide behind soldiers and think we will stop our demonstration,” he stressed.
