The Patriotic Citizens of Kumasi is rescheduling the demonstration they planned for Friday. The Ashanti Regional Police Command says the group failed to comply with the minimum of a five-day notice to the police in accordance with the Public Order Act.
The demonstration was called to protest against what the group describes as the Kufuor Administration’s failed promises to residents of Kumasi. The group mentioned some of the failed promises as inaction on the defunct shoe factory, the jute factory, the Boakra Inland port and the upgrading of the Kumasi Airport international status.
The regional police commander ACP Frank Adu Poku told PeaceFM News that police are negotiating with members of the Patriotic Citizens of Kumasi for a new date. “They have a right to go on demonstration but other things like security, metropolis and the public should be taken into consideration. ACP Adu Poku says a counter group, which also notified the police of a demonstration on the same day, is negotiating for a date change.
Earlier, two new groups, Concerned Citizens of Kumasi and Ashanti Regional Concerned Youth threatened to stage a counter demonstration against the journalist led Patriotic Citizens. The two groups on Tuesday issued separate statements condemning the group for their actions.
The Concerned Youth threatened a counter demonstration if the group goes ahead with its plans of protest march on Friday. It described activities of the Patriotic Citizens as communist tactics intended to cause disaffection for the NPP government and the regional minister, S. K. Boafo in particular.
