Kumasi, June 25, GNA – The Kumasi Youth Fellowship of the Church of Christ on Saturday, donated items worth 3.5 million cedis to the inmates of the Kumasi Central Prisons.

The items included 10 boxes of key soap, four bags of rice, edible oil, toilet rolls and 10 bottles of disinfectant Evangelist Osei Poku, Pastor in-charge of Buokrom branch of the Church in Kumasi, said as Christians it was their objective to assist the needy, adding that, the donation was to support in the upkeep of the inmates.

He said it also forms part of activities to mark the 10th anniversary of the Fellowship and stressed the need for individuals and organisations to have compassion for the needy. Mrs Florence Yeboah Acheampong, Assistant Director at the Kumasi Central Prisons, thanked the Fellowship for the gesture, which she said would help in the upkeep of the inmates.

She said many people unfortunately found themselves in prisons as a result of broken homes resulting in stealing and engaging in criminal activities.

Mrs Acheampong said the Prisons Service gave vocational skills to the inmates in carpentry, shoemaking, bakery, kente weaving and other trades to help them to be self-employed after their sentences. The Assistant Director appealed to people to have love for the inmates and to support them to set up their businesses after their release.

Mr Patrick Ankamah, Vice Chairman of the Fellowship, said some of the activities for the celebration included clean-up exercises, lectures, excursion tours and games.
