The Ghana National Fire Service has appealed to the general Ghanaian public to keep an eye out for unscrupulous persons intending to set fire to some state installations and markets in the country.
This follows Tuesday’s rapid intervention by firemen to prevent what could have been another fire disaster at the Kumasi Central Market in the Ashanti Region.
Four shops were destroyed in the suspected arson attempt at the market. The Ashanti Regional Fire Commander, Semekor Fiadzoe, told the media that a container containing some fuel, a box of matches, and some match sticks, were found at the scene.
Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom, on Accra100.5FM on Thursday February 23, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Ashanti Region, Desmond Ackah, said: “The items that the suspected arsonists wanted to use have been given to the police for further investigations. When we tested initially, we realised it was petrol.”
“The caution we can give at the moment is they (the public) should all be on the lookout. Fire prevention is a collective responsibility and so we appeal to the general public to be on the lookout and devote information to the appropriate authority so that we can also follow it up.”
