Commercial drivers from various unions in Kumasi have united to give authorities of the City, a 7-day ultimatum after which they will block all access routes to the city.
‘Trotro’ drivers on Monday stopped commercial activities to demonstrate against police extortion turned into demands at new terminals as they also accused the Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly of corruption.
According to the drivers, the KMA has entered into partnerships with individual businessmen who own bus terminals to provide working space for them at a higher cost than the government owned terminals.
Leader of the union, Rev. Ellis Owusu said the KMA has neglected their core duty of serving the interest of the people in order to line their pockets with kickbacks.
The Reverend however said at a press conference that the heavy military presence which is aimed at discouraging them from fighting for their rights would not stop them.
“If in seven days they don’t get us any good answers, we will not only keep our vehicles parked, we will block all access routes to and from the City”
Meanwhile, the KMA has stated that they were not ready to engage the drivers on the matter.
Sammy Gyamfi who speaks for the mayor told XYZ News that they will leave the handling of the matter to the security services.
