Kumasi Abattoir inaugurates singeing plant

Kumasi, June 9, GNA – The Kumasi Abattoir Company Limited has inaugurated 50,000 Ghana cedis singeing plant to improve on meat processing in the Metropolis.

The facility, which uses Liquefied Petroleum Gas, is environment friendly as it does not pollute the atmosphere. Mr Samuel Sarpong, Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, who inaugurated the facility, said its introduction would end the preparation of meat (slaughtered animals) using burning lorry tyres, which is unhygienic.

He said the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) would screen food vendors to promote hygiene and appealed to the people to cooperate with personnel of the Assembly’s Environmental Health Unit in the discharge of its duties.

Mr Sarpong asked management of the Abattoir to ensure that meat from the facility is hygienically prepared.

Mr Joe Owusu-Boadi, the Managing Director, said the Abattoir, which has the capacity to prepare more than 400 slaughtered animals daily, was being under-utilized as it processed about 200 animals daily.

He said some butchers slaughtered their animals at other locations in the Metropolis under unhygienic conditions, and appealed to the KMA to stop the practice.

Mr Owusu-Boadi said the Abattoir was working with a German Company, Endiag Energy to construct a biogas plant to produce energy out of waste generated by the company.
