Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, the former President and Founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has described the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as a destructive and vindictive regime, which doesn?t deserve to rule the country.
The NPP, he stressed ought to be uprooted like cassava. He therefore called on the electorate to help kick out the Government of President John Agyekum Kufuor, from power come December 7, 2004.
Sporting an immaculate neckless white linen shirt bedecked with black Adinkra designs in the front and back, he described the elephant which is the totem or symbol of the NPP, as a domesticated animal which must be chased back into the bush come Presidential and Parliamentary elections. The former the Presidential stated the foregoing at Mepe in the Volta Region last Saturday during the 50th anniversary celebration of the enstoolment of Mamaga Awusi Sreku III, (Queenmother) of the Mepe Traditional Area.
Sources which disclosed these to Daily Guide noted that a few minutes into the former President?s speech, Mr Ludwig Hlodze, a Deputy National Youth Organiser of the NDC and Special Assistant to Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, the Party?s Presidential candidate, leaned toward the party?s founder and whispered some thing into his ear.
Ludwig then announced that the Mamaga of Mepe, would like to make a few remarks before the NDC founder, proceeded with his comments. Consequently the Mepe queenmother, got up in her sartorial elegance, and with an aura of royalty, paced up toward the wooden platform followed by her retinue.
Sources say, when she got to the platform, the Queenmother sized up the crowd of between one thousand and thousand five-hundred and heaving her whole body frame, shouted in Ewe? ?Rawlings Is Great.?
In a split second, the tensile props of the wooden structure gave way thus sending all the people on it to the ground with a big thud, the queenmother and the former President, not excepted. The structure was about three (3) feet high. The incident occurred around 3.30pm last Saturday. There was total quiet at the place as the few police men present including Rawlings? personal security detail and the fire brigade, quickly moved in to cordon off the area
