Kufuor won’t impose his name on UP tradition – Spokesman

The Office of former President John Agyekum Kufuor says he will not impose his name on the UP-tradition, but rather leave the decision, as to whether his name should be added to the tradition, entirely to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) – the progeny of the tradition.

Mr. Kufuor has often been celebrated by his party, as, perhaps, the most successful President of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition.

He is seen as having put the icing on the work done by the tradition’s forebears, such as J.B. Danquah, Kofi Abrefa Busia and Simon Diedong Dombo.

A listener to Radio XYZ’s news analysis programme ‘The Analyst’, sought from Mr. Kufuor’s Spokesperson, Frank Agyekum, who appeared as a discussant on the show on Saturday September 6, 2013, whether Mr. Kufuor would love the honour of having his name added to the tradition due to his acclaimed achievements.

Mr. Agyekum said: “This is a matter that he can’t impose”.

When asked by the Host, Francis Ankrah, about whether “it should come from within”, Mr. Agyekum said “definitely”.

He noted that Busia, Danquah and Dombo have their names there “because the party decided” so.

“They did not ask [for it] to be done. And why we have those three is because of the role they played in the institution of our tradition. If the party so thinks that President Kufuor’s name should be added, that will be from the party and not from him”, Mr. Agyekum noted.
