Kufuor To Skip Presidential Debate?

NPP Presidential campaign manager Jake Obetsebi Lamptey says President Kufuor?s participation in a Presidential debate slated for the 16th of this month is not a priority.

The debate under the auspices of the Institute of Economic Affairs is aimed at giving the public an opportunity to hear Presidential aspirants debate the issues that will inform the electorates? choice when they vote on December 7th for President.

But its been plagued with uncertainty as campaign managers of incumbent President Kufuor who sections of the public will want to hear suggest he may not be available at the scheduled date.

The NPP?s Presidential campaign manager Jake Obetsebi Lamptey who successfully steered Mr. Kufuor?s bid in year 2000, at that time made a strong case for a Presidential debate with the incumbent NDC?s candidate.

But the NDC?s candidate-then Vice President Atta Mills did not participate.

Now as incumbents, Mr. Obetsebi Lamptey says President Kufuor?s participation in a Presidential debate is not necessarily the best means his campaign team will recommend.

?I am still evaluating how much that effort would be. I am not inclined to advise my candidate on how much he should give to take part in it. It is a matter of measurement of character. People have seen him in performance for these last four years. There is very little more the Ghanaian public is going to learn about his character. Who he is? We know who he is. What he stands for? We know what he stands for?, he said.

Explaining further why the President may not be part of the debate on the 16th, Mr. Obetsebi Lamptey said Mr. Kufuor did not in the first place make a personal commitment to debate the other Presidential candidates on the IEA?s platform.
