Kufuor returns home from EU/Africa summit

Accra, Dec. 12, GNA – President John Agyekum Kufuor returned

home late Tuesday from Lisbon, Portugal, where he attended a summit of African leaders and the European Union (EU). Briefing newsmen on arrival, Mr Andrew Awuni, presidential spokesman, said a declaration was made at the summit to create a new relationship between Africa and Europe, based on partnership of mutual gains.

This would replace the old situation where the West serves as donors to African countries.

Mr Awuni said a joint strategic plan was adopted which called for the commitment of all leaders to the core values of rule of law, such as democracy and human rights.

President Kufuor and Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates co-chaired the summit.
