Kufuor returns from Abuja

Accra, 15 June, GNA- President John Agaekum Kufour returned home Friday evening from Abuja, Nigeria after attending mid-year Summit of Heads of State and government of ECOWAS.

He was accompanied by Nana Akufo Addo, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and NEPAD.

Nana Akufo-Addo told journalist on arrival that the Summit, formally inducted into office, Dr. Mohamed Ibin Chambas of Ghana as the President of the ECOWAS Commission.

The Foreign Minister said the Heads of State also reviewed and accepted the vision and strategic direction of the ECOWAS, creating a Sub-region without borders to facilitate free movement of goods and people. He said the meeting also called for a common currency market, institutions, security and integration of people. Nana Akuffo Addo said the Heads of States engaged open and long debates about the ideals enshrined in the vision.

He noted that for the first time in many years, guns had fallen silent in the sub-region with the resolution of Cote Ivoire crisis as well as rapprochement taken hold in Guinea Conakry.

At the airport to meet the President was the Vice President Alhaji Alu Mahama, Ministers of States, the Chief of Defence Staff Lt. Gen. Joseph B. Dankwah and the IGP, Mr. Patrick Acheampong.
