Kufuor: Let’s mourn Aliu Mahama, he was a good man

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has asked Ghanaians to join in mourning the late former vice president Alhaji Aliu Mahama who died Friday after a short illness.

Mr Kufuor said the former veep, who served as his vice for eight years, was “a good man and deserves to be mourned”.

He was speaking to journalists at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital Friday afternoon after news of the former vice’s passing broke.

Mr Kufuor had joined family, friends and ministers of state at the hospital to see the body of the former veep.

Upon hearing the news, President John Dramani Mahama who is on a campaign tour of the Bono Ahafo Region said that even though he was aware Aliu Mahama was in a bad condition, “I had no expectation this was going to be the outcome…”

The president said the former veep was a gentleman, a man of tact and decorum.

“I called him a brother…we will all miss him,” the President stated.

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cut short his campaigns and headed to Accra for the burial.

“It’s a very bad news…we’ve lost an outstanding Ghanaian,” he exclaimed upon being informed.

The NPP flagbearer also described Aliu Mahama as “a man who gave a good account of himself in public service.

“I’m very sad because I’ve lost a colleague and an ally…” Nana Addo added, saying “It’s a sad day for the NPP; it’s a sad day for Ghana.”

Meanwhile the vice presidential candidate of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has also suspended his campaign tour of the Northern Region to visit the family of the former veep.

Dr. Baumia arrived at Bimbilla Friday when news of the former veep’s death hit him, forcing him suspend his campaign.
