Kufuor inaugurates water projects in Ketu-South District

Dzodze, Sept 29, GNA- President John Agyekum Kufuor on Tuesday inaugurated a 1.5 million Euros water project for three communities in the Ketu District of the Volta Region.

KFW of Germany provided 90 per cent of the cost and the Ghana Government 10 per cent with five per cent from the HIPC funds. Nine boreholes have been pr9ovided for about 30,500 people from Dzodze, Penyi and Ehie jointly.

President Kufuor who inaugurated the project as part of his three-day official tour of the region said the government was concerned with the plight of rural dwellers especially women who had to walk long distances for water that were polluted and unwholesome.

He said the government had identified provision of potable water as priority in providing better health care especially in the rural areas. President Kufuor said it behoved on the beneficiary communities to ensure that investments made were protected to serve them for very long periods.

Mr Peter Linder, the German Ambassador, appealed to the people to ensure that the facilities were well protected to prolong their life span.

He said about 13 million Euros had been earmarked by the German Government for development projects in Ghana between 2001-2006 and most of the funds had already been provided.
