Accra, Nov.7, GNA- President John Agyekum Kufuor on Friday commended the chiefs and people of the Mamprugu Traditional Area for maintaining peace for development and appealed to other traditional areas to emulate them.
He said the chieftaincy and ethnic conflicts prevailing in other parts of the country were absent from the area, and the chiefs and people of Mamprugu have a sense of responsibility and orderliness but this comportment was in short supply in other areas. President Kufuor made the commendation when a delegation from the area led by Chief Warri, the Bukpe Naa paid a courtesy call on him at the Castle, Osu.
The Bukpe Naa also introduced the new Kpeli-Naa Dauda Mandiaya Bawumia, Paramount Chief of Kperiga under the skin name Naa Sugru and successor to the Kpeli-Naa Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia who died on September 22,last year.
The new Kpeli-Naa known in private life as Dauda Mandiaya Bawumia, 47 was a former Banker and an Accra-based businessman. Chief Warri also informed government on the final funeral rites of the Nayiri, Naa Gamni Mahamadu Abdulai scheduled for Monday, January 19 to Friday January 23, next year to be followed by the selection of a new Nayiri on Monday January 26. The Nayiri died on Monday, June 9 this year.
President Kufuor said all traditional areas should learn from the Mamprusis to maintain peace, adding, ” we are one people and should learn to live together because any conflict in one area affects the other”.
“Let us stay together, we should cherish issues that join us together. Anything that would disturb our peace should be avoided”, he added. Chief Warri assured the government of a peaceful and successful selection of a successor to the Nayiri.
