Former President John Agyekum Kufuor is calling on world leaders to ensure that farmers in their countries apply what he describes as climate-smart technologies for enhanced food security.
He said the unpredictability of the climate in recent times has the tendency to affect a large chain of businesses.
Ghana’s former president made these recommendations in an interview with TV3’s Edward Kwabi on the sidelines of the 69th United Nations General Assembly.
Former President Kufuor attended the Assembly in his capacity as UN’s Special Envoy on Climate Change.
“Food insecurity is very much at risk and that is why we are talking climate smart agriculture,” he said in the United States of America.
“When a farmer cannot predict when it will be rainfall, when your land is being destroyed by drought, how can you save your agriculture and food?” Mr Kufuor wondered.
He was worried the situation can affect a chain of businesses.
“If the trend continues with climate change, then business will not be business.”
Former President Kufuor was recently in Addis Ababa to launch the Africa Agriculture Status Report under the African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF).
