Krobo citizens resident in the UK and Ireland have celebrated their maiden Nymayem festival in London.
Nymayen is traditionally celebrated by the Krobos annually as a thanksgiving festival to the Gods and ancestors for providing the people with their staple food ?Nyma? (Millet).
Krobo Association UK which organised the festival under the theme ?Together we Build? used the occasion to raise funds for the construction of a community centre complex at Krobo Odumase.
The community centre would house a fully equipped computer room, library, meeting rooms and other social facilities to assist students and the community as a whole
The highlight of the celebration was the sprinkling of Nyma by Mr. Sam Aryeetey, the immediate past Chairman of the Krobo UK Association, amidst the singing of Krobo traditional songs and dance.
Speaking at the festival, Ghana?s High Commissioner?s representative for the event, Mrs. Emelia Aning, Minister-Counsellor for (Education) at the Mission, underscored the importance of unity in national development and commended the Krobo Association (UK) for forging a united front to help develop Kroboland.
She noted that community centres play a key role in the social-cultural development of human communities by helping to combat moral decadence through the provision of a variety of recreational programmes for the youth.
In his welcome address the Chairman of the Krobo UK Association, Mr. Frank Narh-Korli said the Association provided financial support, drugs and a wide range of hospital equipment to the Government Hospital at Atua and the St Martin?s De Pores Hospital at Agormanya.
He added the Association also donated a number of books to the community libraries at Kodjonya Odumase Krobo and other communities in the Krobo area.
To enhance education standards in Kroboland, Mr. Narh Koli revealed that the Association would soon establish a scholarship scheme to sponsor needy students up to the University level.
