Kpone youth storms Tema Police Regional offices

Some aggrieved youth from Kpone in the Kpone-Katamanso District on Thursday morning stormed the premises of the Tema Regional Police Command over the arrest of four of their colleagues.

The group clad in red went to the premises on board five 207 Benz buses.

Police personnel wearing helmets, bullet proof vests and holding truncheons were directed to evict the group from the premises by Deputy Commissioner of Police Beatrice Zakpaa Vib-Sanzir, Tema Police Regional Commander.

Mr Emmanuel Nortey, Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Youth of Kpone, told the media that on Tuesday, November 10, four of their members; Benjamin Teye, Emmanuel Nortey, E. T. Nortey and Daniel Mensah were invited for questioning by Regional Command.

Mr Nortey said the four who reported to the Police around 0900 hours were kept at the premises till about 2000 hours.

He said when they rushed to the Police premises after receiving the call, they were arrested and given an enquiry bail and were asked to report the following day.

Mr Nortey alleged that the Police after meeting with Nii Tetteh Ashong, former chief fisherman, and some elders from the Nii Dun Clan of Kpone, asked the four people to sign another bail bond to appear before court without telling them their crime.

He added that they decided to storm the police premises to support their colleagues who were to be sent to court and also to send a signal to the personnel that they were prepared to fight for the betterment of Kpone.

He said rumours were rife in Kpone town that there was a conspiracy to remand the four into custody for no justification.

They threatened to cause mayhem as according to them “we are not afraid of anybody”.

They added however that they would follow due process to prevent the gagging of the youth in Kpone.

Meanwhile, the Tema Regional Commander has refused to comment on the issue and the allegations made by the group with the reason that the matter has been sent to court.
