Kpando: Many hospitalized after consuming ‘poisoned’ tilapia

Some mourners at a funeral in Kpando in the Volta Region have been hospitalized after allegedly eating ‘poisoned’ tilapia at the ceremony.

The tilapia, which is believed to have been preserved with the toxic chemical formalin, was served with banku.

Joyceline Agbenu is one of those who ate the food and tells Joy News her twelve-year-old daughter who also consumed the fish is still on admission at the Margaret Marquart Hospital at Kpando.

She said her daughter, in the evening after consuming the suspected poisoned fish, started complaining of tiredness. She also began to experience stomachache in the day.

Madam Agbenu also narrated her personal ordeal few hours after her daughter was admitted: “I was feeling some pain in my stomach and later became severe; I couldn’t even walk without bending. I went to toilet like I was urinating.”

She recalled that the taste of the fish was “even different from the original tilapia taste”.

Joy News’ checks at the Margaret Marquart Catholic Hospital revealed that many people who ate the tilapia reported at the facility for treatment.

Police have confirmed the alleged food poisoning, but insist no formal complaints have been filed.
