Ejisu (Ash), Dec 27, GNA – Fifty members of the Ejisu Zongo Kotoko Supporters Circle also known as the Chibsah Circle, are taking part in a programme to equip them with skills in the rearing of rabbits and vegetable cultivation.
The programme is being executed under an agricultural project of the Kumasi Institute of Tropical Agriculture (KITA) involves training them in land preparation, management and selection of appropriate vegetable seeds and seedlings for cultivation.
They are also being taught how to build cages for rabbits, their feeding and management.
Mr K A Abu Seidu, Project Co-ordinator of the KITA, speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Ejisu on Sunday, described the training as a step in the right direction since it would help them to generate income.
He appealed to the Ministry of Manpower Development and Employment, to assist the Kotoko supporters after their training with seed money and logistics to establish their farms.
“Without such intervention, the skills acquired during the training would be meaningless since they will not be able to apply them practically,” he added.
He noted that vegetable seeds and seedlings and cages for rabbits were expensive and could not be acquired by the trainees easily without assistance.
Mr Seidu, who is also the Chairman of the Circle, pointed out that the supporters could contribute positively to their clubs only when they were gainfully employed.
He therefore appealed to the management of clubs and supporters unions to explore avenues to provide employment for their supporters to earn incomes to be self-supporting.
