Korle-Bu to commence Laparoscopy course

Accra, July 25, GNA – The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on Friday received six laparoscope towers and its accessories worth 160,000 Euros from Karl Storz University, Michigan, US, to kick-start a Laparoscopy course.

Laparascopy Surgery is a modern surgical technique in which operations in the abdomen are performed through small incision, usually between the sizes between 2 and 3 centimetres as compared to incision needed in the traditional surgical procedures. The equipment is the first of it kind in the sub-Sahara Africa and would help the department to perform effective and efficient abdominal surgery.

Professor Aaron L. Lawson, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana, Legon, briefing the media said the introduction of Laparascopy equipment would aid the work output of surgeons.

He said benefits of the new technology included smaller incision, which would reduce pain and shorten recovery time, reduce blood loss and reduce exposure of internal organs to possible external contaminants. The key element in Laparoscopic surgery is the use of a laparoscope, which is telescopic rod lens system that is usually connected to a video camera.

Karl Storz University and International Aid would also provide personnel to train about 20 selected medical practitioners from Accra, Kumasi, Akosombo and Benin.

Professor Yaw Kwawukume, Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, said Laparoscopy study started in Ghana at the Hospital in 1972. He said the switch to the new technology would facilitate efficient, effective, fast and reliable treatment of abdominal related diseases.

Professor Nii Otu Nartey, Chief Executive Officer of Korle-Bu, thanked Mr Ara Srkissinan, Regional Director of the Sub-Saharan African of Karl Storz University, for the kind gesture.
