Kori Youth Association unveils new drums

Kori Youth Association (KOYA), an Accra and Tema-based association of people from Kori in the Builsa District of the Upper East Region, has inaugurated a new set of traditional drums.

The drums, which are of great cultural significance to the Kori people, were unveiled by invited dignitaries and patrons of KOYA.

Speaking at the event the Chairman of the Association, Mr. George Abavelim, said 15 years of the Association’s existence had been marked by social and cultural upliftment of its members and some “decent achievements” in the area of development for the Builsa District.

Some of the achievements include a fundraising from the inauguration of the association’s cloth, which was used to construct a nutrition and day care centre.

A fund established in August 2003 was used to build a classroom block for the Koya Primary School, hitherto located under trees.

The chairman, however, added: “Intake has outstripped the facility, giving rise to some of the children sitting under the trees again. It is a disturbing issue for the Kori comunity in Ghana.”

Mr Abavelim said given the enormity of the situation, the contributions of members alone could not provide permanent suitable classrooms for the children for effective teaching and learning.

He, therefore, appealed to the District Chief Executive of the area and the Member of Parliament for Builsa North, Mr. James Agalga, who is also the Deputy Minister for the Interior, to come to the aid of the community.
