Koforidua Police arrests 34 suspected armed robbers

Koforidua, Sept 11, GNA – Personnel of Eastern Regional Police Command on Thursday, arrested 34 suspected armed robbers including four women at various suburbs in Koforidua Municipality. Twenty-three out of the suspects arrested during a special operation at Effiduase, Adweso, Nsukwao, Korle Nkwanta and Nyamekrom, all suburbs of Koforidua were foreign nationals.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), George Anko-Bil, Eastern Regional Police Commander, briefing newsmen in Koforidua said a locally manufactured pistol, 17 lap top computers, 16 wrappers of some dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp (wee), eight mobile phones, an axe, a pair of binoculars and a generator were retrieved from them. He expressed worry about the behaviour of the armed robbers who not only take huge sums of monies from their victims but in most cases raped the women and later burnt down their place of robbery. ACP Anko-Bil said the police command had within a month arrested 75 of such criminals whose ages ranged from 18-25 years and were being prosecuted at the courts.

He said the police would intensify their patrols in the Region to ensure that criminals would not have a field day, especially as the December general elections draw near.

ACP Anko-Bil appealed to the public to volunteer information to the police to enhance their operations.

He urged the public to form neighbourhood watch committees and be each other’s keeper by calling the police immediately an unusual noise was heard in their neighbourhood during the night. ACP Anko-Bil was optimistic the police would be provided with more vehicles to intensify their patrols and appealed to churches and philanthropists in the society to assist the police. In another development, Alex Koomson an ex-convict, had been arrested at Akyem Oda with a US made revolver and eight rounds of ammunition. 11 Sept. 08
