Kofi Jumah calls on NPP to boycott 2016 elections

A leading Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is on a warpath.

He says his party should boycott the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections and indeed all other elections until conditions for free and fair polling exist.

Mr. Maxwell Kofi Jumah, former Deputy Minister for Local Government said under the current circumstances, it is a complete waste of time to contest elections in Ghana.

According to him, all national elections since 1992 including the one which brought his own party to power were not free and fair.

Captain Smart, host of Adom FM’s morning show then asked, “Are you saying that even the election which brought president Kufuor to power was not free and fair.”

Maxwell Kofi Jumah responded, “Yes, I mean it. It was not free and fair and Ghana’s Electoral Commission is the worse in Africa.

Asked what he wanted to see changed, he said the members of the Electoral Commission should be appointed by the Judicial Council and not the President.

He also said they should serve only one term of six years in office.

Mr. Jumah was emphatic that no matter how hard they campaigned, the NPP could not capture power because the electoral commission is biased against the party.

He said former President Jerry John Rawlings deliberately created the Electoral Commission in a way which guarantees that the NDC will always win elections.

“If they will listen to me, nobody will campaign for any election until the Electoral Commission has been completely overhauled.
