Special aide to ex- President Rawlings, Kofi Adams, has admitted that Former First Lady, Mrs. Konadu Agyemang Rawlings’, has indeed been campaigning across some parts of the country, including Takoradi in the Western Region.
He, however, insists Mrs. Rawlings’ campaign should not be misconstrued or seen as related to partisan politics, but rather, part of efforts to regenerate projects under the 31st December Women’s Movement (31ST DWM) which virtually collapsed during the tenure of the NPP government.
Mr. Kofi Adams was responding to a publication by the ‘Chronicle’ Newspaper that the wife of his boss was in Takoradi at the weekend to promote her ambition of becoming president of Ghana.
The Chronicle newspaper reported on Tuesday, September 28th, that whiles Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, President of the 31st December Women’s Movement (31ST DWM) was in the Western Region ostensibly to promote her presidential ambition, she was allegedly robbed of all her money in the hotel she was lodging in.
The newspaper said whilst the former first lady was busily defending the legacies of her husband (Mr. Rawlings), after she had arrived safely in Takoradi, and was throwing jabs at the current President (John Evans Atta Mills), in the studios of Kyzz FM, for allegedly stealing her husbands’ ideas, a waiter at the hotel she was lodging was also busily doing ‘justice’ to the large campaign money she had left in her handbag.
The waiter, who was only named as Williams, allegedly went into Konadu’s Executive Suite, under the guise of working in the room, and succeeded in filling the bag he was holding with all the money the tough speaking former first lady had stashed in her bag.
But speaking in an interview on “Kokrokoo” arguably Ghana’s best morning show programme on PeaceFM, Mr. Adams said he cannot confirm or deny the theft case but what he can attest to is that, the former First Lady was in Takoradi to rebuild her Child Education Project and the 31ST DWM which could not survive the political attacks of the NPP.
The NDC Deputy General-Secretary was also equally non-committal and failed to douse grapevine news regarding Mrs. Konadu Rawlings’ presidential ambitions, when asked whether the Former First Lady intends running for President in 2012.
According to him, though there have been demands from some women and youth groups that she (Mrs. Rawlings) should stand as president to continue with her good works, Mrs. Rawlings has not come out to publicly declare her intentions.
“She has not declared any interest and she cannot declare her interest because the NDC party has rules, and somebody cannot just rise up and start campaigning when the party has not authorized that,” he said.
He, nonetheless quickly added that “in the game of politics, you cannot say No because you don’t know what will happen.”
Meanwhile, the Takoradi District Crime Officer, DSP Dela Dzansi has denied knowledge of any theft case involving Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings.
DSP Dela Dzansi intimated that indeed several journalists called him up concerning the case but contrary to what the Chronicle newspaper reported, he never confirmed the incident as true, neither has a report been filed at the Takoradi police regarding any such incident.
