Kumasi, March 5, GNA – The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) branch of the Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) of the National Democratic Congress has expressed concern about the poor treatment of some political parties by some media houses. A statement jointly signed by Mr Moses K. Armah, President and Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Public Relations Officer of TEIN, said the “bias and unfair” treatment of the opposition political parties and groups by certain media houses was having an adverse effect on building democracy in the country.
It said that there was lack of a level playing field for all political parties so far as the media was concerned.
The statement said: “There really is no level playing field in our media front and this is having an adverse toll on our attempt to build a democratic state. This is because citizens are denied the opportunity to know the true state of affairs in order to hold their leaders accountable.”
The group said the unfortunate development cut across both the state and the private media but specifically mentioned the Ghana Television, Metro Television, TV Africa and Peace FM as the most culpable organizations.
The statement said the hosts of some programmes of these media house had been biased towards the ruling New Patriotic Party. The group said there was the need for the media to ensure fairness and equal treatment for all political parties and reminded journalists of their responsibility to help entrench democracy in the country. It called on the National Media Commission to ensure that fairness and objectivity prevailed in work of the media, during 2008 Election.
