KNUST police to question roommate of suicide student

Police at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) are scheduled to question a roommate of first-year Chemical Engineering student who allegedly committed suicide on Friday.

Adwoa Agyarkwa Anyimadu-Antwi is said to have left a note behind moments before she hanged herself with a nylon rope in her hostel on campus.

Though post-mortem is expected on Monday, police say the student [name withheld] could be of help as they begin investigations into circumstances surrounding her death.

KNUST Police District Commander, DSP Boakye Ansah, tells Nhyira FM his outfit has already extended an invitation to the student, through university authorities.

The student is the first to have spotted the deceased hanging on a rope in their room at Independence Hall, on return from a lecture.

The student cut the rope in a rescue attempt before calling for help but her colleague was pronounced dead on arrival at the University Hospital.

Police say the student had been stranded for a while because the door to their room was locked, though officials at the Porter’s Lodge told her one of her three colleagues had earlier picked the key up at the counter.

The student, however, managed to use a different room key to open their room only to find her roommate hanging on a rope tied to the ceiling fan.

Police will however not say if the ‘rescuer’ is a suspect, as they commence investigations.

Meanwhile, sources say university authorities have informed the parents of the deceased about the incident.
