KNUST Lecturers Develop Fufu Machine

Joy Online — A group of lecturers at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have successfully developed a device for pounding Fufu, a widely patronised local dish.

The equipment can be operated both manually and by electricity.

Speaking at the launch of the machine known as KADOAN Fufu machine, the Omanhene of the Asokore, Nana Dr Susubribi Krobea Asante noted that the country needed more of such initiatives to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

He noted that such an innovation has the potential to propel Ghana into an industrialised country.

Nana Krobea Asante pointed out that such initiative could only be possible if the nation supports and patronise indigenous technology.

He further stated that promoting sustainable economic development requires the citizenry to reduce its reliance on foreign technology and encourage local invention.

The Fufu pounding machine is the brain child of Prof Kwadeo Kesse, Dr Lawrence Ansong and the late R.E Doddoo all lecturers of the Engineering Department of the KNUST.

The mechanism has the ability to pound cassava, plantain, yam; cocoyam and can also handle a mixture of the various foodstuffs to meet individual taste.

In an interview with Joy FM sister station Luv Fm in Kumasi; Dr Ansong observed that machine building engineering is key to the industrilisation and socio-economic transformation of the Ghanaian Society.

The Vice Chancellor of the KNUST Prof Kwesi Andam asked local entrepreneurs as well as foreign investors to take advantage of various development models and technologies by the university.
