KNUST inaugurates Fire Station

A Fire Safety Unit built for the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), at the cost of GH¢50,000.00, was on Monday inaugurated at a ceremony.

It is equipped with a fire tender and manned by a squad of 40 fire-fighters.

The project, jointly undertaken by the University and Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), is to help ensure quick response to fire emergencies within the campus and its environs.

This comes on the heels of the recent fire outbreak that ravaged educational materials and Information, Technology and Communication (ICT) teaching aids at the KNUST Ceramics Section

Professor William Otoo Ellis, the Vice-Chancellor, said given its strategic location and the valuable property there, such a facility has been long overdue, adding that, the inauguration of the Unit should, therefore, be refreshing news to the university community.

They would continue to embark on projects that promote safety and create the right conditions for the pursuit of its goal of a Centre of Excellence in terms of infrastructure and academic programmes, he said.

Professor Ellis said, he is confident that the Unit would live up to expectation.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer (DCFO) Philip Aheng-Mensah, the Regional Fire Officer, expressed worry about recent fire incidents in the country and called for sustained public education to stop the fires.
